Everyday nutrition notes

Diabetes & blood sugar

An unsweetened water or plain buttermilk bowl can reduce added sugar. Jaggery, honey and white sugar all contribute sugars. Millet still contains carbohydrates and can raise blood glucose; fibre does not guarantee that spikes will be prevented. Portion size, the recipe and individual response matter. If you manage diabetes, discuss portions with your clinician or dietitian.

Weight management

Count the milk and sweeteners as well as the powder. Cooking in water and adding 50 ml skimmed milk adds about 17.5 kcal, 1.7 g protein and 2.5 g carbs. A weighed portion can help with meal planning; overall intake and your individual needs matter more than any single food.
